The Hauraki Rail Trail is the easiest riding trail in New Zealand and is accessible from Waihi. In Waihi itself you can hire a bike and get maps as well as catch the train to Waikino station and there you can commence your cycle of the rail trail. Alternatively start at the Waihi train station.
The trail is 82km long and includes a section through the stunning Karangahake Gorge. This is the closest section of the trail to Waihi, so it doesn't take long to enter the gorge from the Waihi end. One of the highlights for many is riding through an historic rail tunnel.
It's a great day out for the whole family with a very well-maintained cycle path. Take a packed lunch and plenty of liquid refreshments.
